If you are a fly fishing enthusiast, you are always looking for that perfect trip. The Snake River offers plenty of spots you will find simply incredible.

The Snake River runs over 1,000 miles and is the main tributary to the Columbia River. It originates near the continental divide in Yellowstone Park in Wyoming and runs down into Idaho. The river is simply beautiful on its own right, but is also known for two odd things. Evil Knievel attempted to jump it [and failed] and Lewis and Clark were the first to explore the river.

For fly fishing, the Snake has a lot to offer. The best time to hit the river is after the melt off. Since the seasons range in dates, it is often difficult to plan ahead since nobody can really predict when things warm up. In general, you want to look to June and July each year. The river is a mass of debris and dirt as the snow pack melts through late April. After that, the water clears and it is time for some fun until October when winter starts to spread its wings again.

If you are thinking about hitting the Snake this year, the fish of choice is the Spotted Cutthroat Trout. It is a dry fly fish, which makes the Snake a paradise for those who prefer to cast the dry fly. In June and July, the fishing is not particularly challenging. The trout are hungry and strike just about anything. If you are a novice, this means you may be in for the time of your life. Just about any large dry fly is going to get action like you would not believe.

So, where do you fish. If you are looking for shore spots, there are plenty. The best are Jackson Lake Dam, Pacific Creek and Deadmans Bar. If you prefer to get in and float, you probably want to go with a guide. The Snake River is a volatile piece of water. It will run from serene and quiet into vicious, churning rapids and back before you know what threw you into the water.

If you are looking for some excellent fishing in a beautiful area, it is hard to go wrong with a trip to the Snake River. If you are married, the upper sections of the lake provide many other attractions such as Yellowstone for a spouse that isn’t as excited about the fishing prospects.

Paul Bryan asked:

Let’s get our first fun fact cleared up right at the beginning – turtles are reptiles, not amphibians. Sure they’re equally happy in both land and water – except for tortoises that will drown if put in deep water – but this does not make them amphibians. In fact, turtles are pretty unique as reptiles as the only ones to actually grow an external shell made of bone!

And it seems all that calcium goes right into that shell because turtles don’t have teeth. They’ve got a pretty sharp beak that will take your finger right off if you’re not fast enough but then, you are faster than a turtle right?

All living turtles belong to the crown group Chelonia and there about 300 species existing today, although a fair few are on the endangered list. Turtles are local to every continent, except Antarctica, and every ocean, except the Arctic. Wondering why they don’t live in the coldest regions? You guessed it! As reptiles, turtles are cold-blooded and hence cannot generate their own body heat.

But literally everywhere else you look you’re likely to find turtles and this is probably because they’re one of the oldest living species of reptile, having been around for about 215 million years.

The turtle’s shell is called its ‘exoskeleton’ which basically means the ‘outer skeleton’ made of bone. The turtle exoskeleton, or shell, grows out from its ribs to fuse with the backbone and is formed of large plates called scutes.

The upper part of the shell is called the carapace and the lower part is called the plastron. This lower belly is how you tell the males and females apart.

In males, the plastron is concave while in the females it is flat. Not all turtle shells are hard. In fact, some are downright ’soft’ earning some turtles the name ‘leatherback.’ (The leatherback sea turtle, by the way, grows to be one of the largest turtles in existence at around two meters long.)

Another little known fact about turtles is their well-developed sense of sight and smell. This, second to their shells, is their greatest defense against predators. If they can see or smell an attack far away enough they can drag themselves into safety under mud, water or a large rock before the predator gets close enough to do some real damage. The pancake tortoise, for instance, has a soft-shell but this helps it much more than a hard shell would by allowing it to squeeze into rock crevices to escape attack.

All turtles and tortoises breathe water and although they can go for extended periods of time underwater eventually they all must resurface.

This includes the Australian freshwater turtle which has a most fascinating feature near its cloacal cavity.

These are the blood-rich papillae that are able to absorb dissolved oxygen straight from water, similarly to fish gills, allowing it to stay underwater much longer than many of its counterparts.

Turtles are extremely fascinating creatures and the more information you find out about them, the more you want to know. Keeping one as a pet entails knowing a lot more than you would need to know about other animals but it is definitely well worth the effort.

Look up turtles and turtle facts online, in books, at pet-shops – find out everything you can before getting one as a pet but do get one if you’ve been thinking about it. They make great pets!

Candace Sinclair asked:

We’ve all heard it said that we are what we eat, and with many families, that’s not a pretty picture.

Long ago, dogs survived on the prey that they hunted. They chewed on bones and that’s what kept their teeth clean. However, our pets don’t live in the wilderness anymore. They’ve moved from an outdoor environment into our living room. Now, they wait or demand that we feed them. They love to feast on packaged foods, and oftentimes this can harm your pet.

The following five foods are toxic to your dog.

1. Alcoholic Beverages

Many dog owners would never dream of giving their pet a taste of alcohol, yet dogs are attracted to the sweetness, and it can cause serious and fatal intoxication. Never offer your dog an alcoholic beverage.

These are just some of the signs and side effects:

Cardiac arrest and death Depression Excitement Incoordination Excessive urination Breathing rate is slowed

2. Avocado

Did you know that avocado leaves, fruit, seeds, and bark contain a toxin known as Persin? The Guatemalan variety is the most toxic, but all avocados have toxic potential. An avocado causes vomiting, diarrhea, and primarily gastro intestinal distress. You should keep avocados and any prepared avocado spreads away from your dog.

3. All forms of chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine, which is a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. If your dog exhibits any of the following signs, you should question if s/he has ingested chocolate.

Initial excitement Vomiting and diarrhea Seizures Increased heart rate and arrhythmia Increased water consumption and frequent urination

4. Macadamia Nuts

Although very tasty for humans, Macadamia nuts contain a toxin that affects the digestive and nervous systems of dogs. In addition, the nuts affect their muscles and leads to paralysis. Even butters made out of nuts can cause the same symptoms.

5. Apples, plums, peaches, and apricots

If your dog eats the stems, seeds, or leaves of these fruits, it can be toxic. Each of the fruits mentioned above contain a cyanide type compound. Signs of toxicity include difficulty breathing, dilated pupils, apprehension, shock, and hyperventilation.

M. Bruno asked:

Menu Foods, manufacturer of more than 100 brands of dog food subject to recall, due to contaminated wheat gluten causing kidney failure and death in thousands of dogs, today significantly expanded that recall.

Now, dog food not made with suspect wheat gluten but manufactured at the same facilities as previously recalled dog food, has been added to the list. The reason, cross contamination.
Evidence of cross contamination has been reported to Menu Foods from a consumer and study results, according to its own press release.

The continuing expansion of the dog food recall, while reports of kidney failure and death in dogs dominate many news channels, point to a deeper flaw in the manufacture and marketing of dog food.

That problem is the almost ‘Wild West’ atmosphere in which virtually any ingredient could be included in dog food, labeled a nutrient using deceptive wording, and sold to unsuspecting dog owners intent on buying a healthy dog food product.

This has been easy for the dog food industry as there is virtually no regulation in this area. The FDA is under financed and has insufficient manpower to monitor plant production. Animal food does not have to meet the same standards as human grade food. As a result, inclusions labeled as protein sources are frequently far more sinister on its face than labels suggest.

The dog food industry was founded in America has an answer to business demands for a viable and profitable outlet for industrial waste which includes diseased animal parts, buy-products, fillers and slaughterhouse refuse.

That the current dog food recall continues to dominate worldwide attention is evidence of a widespread disregard by the dog food industry for the well being of dogs and pets worldwide.

In a laughable response to a recent U.S. Senate hearing the pet food industry proclaimed their products “safe” while dogs and cats lay dead and dying in veterinary hospitals from the United States to South Africa.

Dog owners should not be shocked at news of the unhealthy nature of dog food products, when even regulated human food supplies are at risk.

Caroline Smith DeWaal of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Stated recently that “We see the pet food recall as a warning sign for the government that they need to do more to protect the food supply,” “It could easily happen to an ingredient used in human food as well.”

So what should a dog owner do?

• Make sure that your dog is not being fed any of the dog food subject to recall.

• If at all possible, start feeding your dog a diet that is natural and healthy for both Fido’s health and your wallet. An example of such a dog food diet can be seen at : http://www.dogs-4life.com/raw-vs-kibble.html

• If your dog shows any signs of illness, contact your veterinarian immediately. If contaminated dog food is the cause of illness in your dog, time is of the absolute essence.

Many bearded dragons owner don’t know how to keep a
dragon clean, so here are some words about bathing
a bearded dragon. This should give you the basics about.

Bathing is an important part in keeping a healthy dragon. Regular
bathing helps improve the Beardie’s overall hydration status and
keep the Beardie clean and happy.

Most Bearded Dragons prefer to potty in the tub (making it very
easy for you to clean up after them and disinfect the surfaces).
Baths also help during shedding, keeping the loosening skin soft.

Some Beardies are comfortable bathing in the sink or the bath tub
and others may not like bath time at all. You can try placing a
see-through Rubbermaid container on your countertop and gently
placing your Beardie inside. He may feel more comfortable resting
on your hand while it is submerged in the water. Or you could try
rolling up a wash cloth and letting him rest his arms on it. They
need to feel secure or they will never enjoy bath time.

While bathing your Bearded Dragon, the bath water should ideally be
warm on your wrist and not hot, much like bath water for a small
child. Make the water only as deep as your Beardie’s chest or half
way up their front arms. You should never leave your Beardie
unattended in the bath because accidents only take a second to
happen.

The ideal temperature for the bath water should be …
